English Language Arts - Creative Writing
The Art of Writing
This 5 day adventure in writing, exposes students to different writing mediums. Professional writers will help them explore these mediums creatively and professionally.
Day 1: Poetry
Our adventure begins as we travel to Columbus, Ohio, home of Ohio State University. Students will work with award wining poet Felicia Zamora. Students will learn about poetry in its modern form, and even create an original piece during the workshop. Students will be able to ask questions, and learn what it’s like to be a real poet.
Day 2 - Fiction
Students will travel to Chicago, Illinois and explore the Writers Museum, interacting with exhibits on American fiction to journalism to songwriting to historical authors.
Later on students will participate in a writers workshop with Edgar Award winning fiction author, James Klise. Students will engage in an experimental workshop focused on creative writing, experiencing a taste of professional writing. The workshop will include a book talk regarding Klise’s award winning work, The Art of Secrets.
Day 3 - Higher Education / American Classics
Today students will tour the campus of one of the nations best writing programs at Northwestern University. Students will meet professors and see first hand what college looks like at one of our finest universities.
After lunch students will do the Shal Silverstein tour, visiting his boyhood home and school. Students will learn how tragedy played into Shal’s writing and stories as they explore his poems from the American classic, Where the Side Walk Ends.
Day 4 - American Classics / Journalism
Students will travel to Hannibal, MO to explore Mark Twain’s hometown. They will see his childhood home, include the homes of all the main characters found in the American Classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Mark Twain Caves. Students will examine how the rural Mississippi River area of Missouri, shaped his writing.
Later that evening students will meet a journalist from the New Yorker Magazine, Daniel Alarcon. Daniel will talk with students about life as a profession journalist, sharing stories of danger and adventure as he covers stories in Latin America.
Day 5 - Nashville Songwriters
Today takes students to city of songwriters, Nashville, TN. As part of a week long creative writing project, students will work with Hall of Fame Songwriter, Gary Burr on their lyrics to his instrumental song. Gary has written songs for artists such as LeAnn Rimes, Garth Brooks, and Lady Antebellum. Gary will work with kids to bring their creation to life inside a Nashville recording studio.
